Oliver was born in the part of Norton which became Mansfield. He was described as 5'5" with a ruddy complexion when he enlisted in the Continental Army in 1780. He married Rhoda Fisher about 1782, and the 1790 census reports them living in Mansfield with a son and two women (daughters or mothers?). He was living in Bennington, Vermont, by 1832, but had moved by 1840 (possibly to New York). He married Thankful Fry on 10 August 1842.
