A veterans of the Civil War, he fought for the South at the Battle of Vicksburg and was captured as a prisoner of war.

John & Mary (Fulks) Wells migrated from West Monroe, Louisiana to Texas, along with many other families that were migrating after the Civil War. They settled in Benton City (Atascosa County), Texas in 1876.
