Charlotte was born in 1815 near Beaulieu Rails, Boldre, Hampshire, and was baptised at Beaulieu on 12 May, 1815, the daughter of William Wells and Jane Miller. [1]
The Rev Henry Comyn took his own census of his parishioners in Boldre, which included Beaulieu Rails, Hampshire, in 1817, including maps, personal details and details about rent: Ref BRS 54 £3 Karley (Kearley) William & Jane (Miller) WELLS (see footnote) Children: William 1802; Mary 1805; John 1818 [sic,should read 1808]; George 1810; Charlotte 1815; [Hannah 1818]. Footnote Both William and Jane Wells (or Wills) buried at the Baptist graveyard in Massey (Factory) Lane William 1778 - 2/5/1854 Jane 1783 -5/5/1844 BRS 54 is Beaulieu Rails, house 54; £3 being the rent paid to Karley. In 1841 she was in the household of her brother John at Swan Mead, Bermondsey, Surrey - John Wells, 33, Tanner; Mary Wells, 31; John Wells, 11; Jane Wells, 9; George Wells, 7; Ann Wells, 5; Elizabeth Wells, 4; Hannah Wells, 2; Charlotte Wells, 26; Francis Wells 16 (female).[3]
In 1842 Charlotte Wells aged 27 was sentenced to 3 months imprisonment for larceny at Southampton Town Sessions.[4]
She married Edward Lankester on 6 Jan 1844 at Saint Marys, Portsea, Hampshire.[5]
She appears to have had two illegitimate sons, George in 1837 and Henry in 1840.
In 1851 she was living in Norling, Boldre, Hampshire - Edward Lancaster h m 60 wood cutter b Boldre; Charlotte Lancaster wife 30 b Boldre; George Lancaster son 14 b Jersey Hants; Henry William Lancaster son 11 scholar b Jersey, Hants; Stephen Wells visitor unmarr 24 ag lab b Boldre.her brother[6] George and Henry were Charlotte's apparently illegitimate sons, who usually used the surname Wells.
Edward died in 1859 at Boldre, Hampshire, and Charlotte remarried to George Redford on 13 May 1860 at St Pancras, Middlesex - George Redford bachelor of full age, labourer of Church Row, father James Redford labourer & Charlotte Lancaster widow of full age of Prebend St;, father William Wells dead. Witnesses Harry Wells and Elizabeth Rawlance[7]
In the 1861 census they were living at 33 Prebend St, Kentish Town, Middlesex - George Redford head marr 37 brickmaker b Beaulieu, Hants; Charlotte Redford wife 45 b Hants Baldaw (Boldre?).[8]
In 1881 she was living at Boldre, Hampshire next door to her daughter in law - Jane Wells head marr 40 Wife of sailor in P and O service born Norley Wood, Hants; Florence Georgina Wells dau 3 b London Middlesex; Alice Maude Wells dau 1 b Beaulieu Rails. They were living in the next house to her mother in law - Charlotte Redford head widow 66 b Beaulieu Rails; Robert Arthur Wells unmarr 20 nephew b Bermondsey Surrey; Harry William Wells grandson 5 b Norley Wood.[9]
In 1891 she was living at Village St, East Boldre, Hants - Charlotte Redford head widow 76 b East Boldre; Harry William Wells grandson single 15 errand boy b Norley Wood[10] (Harry William Wells was her son George's son)
