Biography

'New York state flag'
Rose (Wells) Hildreth was a New Yorker.

Rose was born about 1851. She passed away about 1950. She lived in Riverhead, Long Island, New York, USA with her husband George Hildreth, Sr. Riverhead is the seat of Suffolk County, Long Island, New York. Rose and George had at least two children, George Jr and Grace.

Rose and George, Jr. enjoyed taking family and friends on boat rides. The photo on the right features the following people standing: Grace Hildreth, Lucy, and Bird Smith Dawson. Seated are Lucille Dawson (later Ceruti), Cecelia (Cece) Bird Smith, and Aunt Rose A. W. Hildreth. Most likely, George, Jr. took the photo. It was inscribed on the back: "To Cece and Hil Sept. 3, 1939." in the handwriting of someone other than Bird Smith Dawson or Lucille Dawson Ceruti. One can surmise that Hil refers to Birt Smith Dawson's brother, Hildreth B. Smith, Esq. Then, in Lucille Dawson Ceruti's handwriting, the people in the picture were identified in each row. Also inscribed is "George Hildreth's boat Peconic Bay Riverhead" Long Island, New York, USA.

At the Riverhead Yacht Club, of which Rose's son George was Commodore, Aunt Rose A. Hildreth celebrated her 96th birthday, on 8 July, (about 1947). The 43 friends and relatives in atteendance decorated cakes with 96 candles as Aunt Rose, aka Gram, exclaimed "I don't feel as old as that. I am 96 years young." The candles were so numerous that they had to be distributed about seven cakes which were made also by friends and relatives. At that time, Aunt Rose lived on 26 Riverside Drive, Riverhead with her son, the former District Attorney, now a judge, and Miss Grace Hildreth. Her granddaughter is Mrs Russel H. Moore, also who lived in Riverhead at that time. In attendance to this special event were several nieces, nephews, and cousins, "distant and far." In attendance were Mrs. Bird S. Dawson, Miss Lucille Dawson, and her friend (later husband) Mr. Tracy Ceruti of Eastport.

Besides the seven birthday cakes, telegrams, cards, telephone calls and personal good wishes, two special poems were read in her honor and many bifts presented. An afternoon of music followed with Miss Lucille Dawson, at the piano. Gram requested thst Lucille play her favorite, "Will There Be Any Stars in My Crown." The newspaper article that documented this event ended with a fine tribute, "One thing we are sure of, Gram, you have scattered many "stars" of kindness, mercy, joy, and gladness during your long stay with us. We hope you reach your goal of one hundred years. But this years celebration can help to let you know how very much we're glad you have had a 96th birthday."

Page 12 features a newspaper article with a picture of Judge George W. Hildreth and his mother, "Aunt" Rose A. Hildreth, age 96. Although the name of the newspaper and its date were not preserved, from circumstantial evidence, the year of the newspaper was about 1947. This notebook is a treasure trove of historical and genealogical gems that await the careful eye of a researcher.
