Biography

Gert Wells was born in the Colony of Victoria (1851-1900)

Gertrude Evelyn Mary (Gert) Wells was born in South Melbourne, at the home of her parents, 42 Howe Crescent, on the 3rd of May 1888. She was the daughter and youngest child of eight of William Wells and Jane Fry. ^{[1] [2]}

Gert was the baby of the family in every way: her eldest siblings were some twenty years older; and she was born nine years after George, when her mother was 43 and her father 50.

Her father, originally from Dorset, worked in building, real estate, and estate sales. Her mother was originally from Surrey. By the time Gert was born, her father had become a very successful man, elected Mayor of South Melbourne, with his business operating in Clarendon Street with her eldest brother Ernest.

Gert did not marry. ^[3]

Gert and her sisters Annie and Edith all lived together in Albert Park in their later years. Annie and Edith both passed away in 1956, at which stage it is conjectured that Gert moved to Camberwell.

Gert passed away in 1961, aged 73. ^{[4] [5]} She is buried with her parents and sisters in Brighton cemetery. ^[6]

3. ↑ According to family history Gertrude married George Pumphrey. However, no records of this have ever been found. In 1905, a Mr George Henry Pumphrey married a Miss Mabel Wells, and it is conjectured that at some point this was assumed to be Gertrude.
