Biography

John was born near Beaulieu Rails, Hampshire c1808, the son of William Wells and Jane Miller. The Rev Henry Comyn took his own census of his parishioners in Boldre, which included Beaulieu Rails, Hampshire, in 1817: William & Jane (Miller) WELLS Children: William 1802; Mary 1805; John 1818 [sic,should read 1808]; George 1810; Charlotte 1815; [Hannah 1818]. Details in [ ] were added by the editor, Jude James in 1982[1]

He married Mary Winkworth on 11 May 1830 at Boldre, Hampshire, where they resided for the first few years of their marriage.[2]

The family moved from Boldre to Bermondsey, Surrey before 1838, and in 1841 were living at Swan Mead, Bermondsey - John Wells, 33, Tanner; Mary Wells, 31; John Wells, 11; Jane Wells, 9; George Wells, 7; Ann Wells, 5; Elizabeth Wells, 4; Hannah Wells, 2; Charlotte Wells, 26; Francis (female) Wells 16 John's sisters.[3]

The family moved to Chelmsford, Essex from Bermondsey c1845 and in 1851 were living at Baddow Lane, Chelmsford - John Wills h m 45 tanner b Boldre; Mary wife 42 b Beaulieu; John son 20 tanner b Boldre; Ann dau 15 b Boldre; Elizabeth dau 13 b Bermondsey; Hannah dau 11 scholar b B'sey; Henry son 10 scholar b B'sey; Robert son 6 scholar b Chelmsford; William son 3 scholar b Chelmsford; Jane dau 11 mths b Chelmsford; William Winkworth nephew 7 b Boldre.[4]


The family had returned from Essex to Bermondsey, Surrey before 1854 and in 1861 were at 37 Great George St - John Wills h m 56 tanner b Bolder Hants; Mary Wills wife 54 b Beaulieu; Henry Wills son unm 19 jobber tan yard b Bermondsey; Robert Wills son 16 jobber at curing b Chelmsford Essex; William Wills son 13 jobber tan yard b Chelmsford; Jane Wills dau 10 scholar b Chelmsford; Charles Wills son 7 scholar b Bermondsey.[5]

He died in the Mar quarter 1869 in Bermondsey St Mary Magdalen age 60.[6]
