Biography

Rhoda (Wells) Rice was born in Alabama.
Rhoda (Wells) Rice was a Missourian.

Rhoda Elizabeth Wells was born about 1848 in Madison County, Alabama. Her father was Michael Wells and her mother Rhoda Elizabeth Honea.[1]

At the age of 12, she lived in Washington, Stone County, Missouri near the Galena post office.[2] As a young girl, the war between the states broke out. Her father left to fight in the war, leaving her and the rest of the family the best they could. It was a dangerous time, with lawlessness spreading terror throughout the country.[3]

She survived the hardships of war on the home front, and on November 18, 1868, she married Nathaniel Vincent Rice in Oregon County, Missouri.[4] A year before her marriage, John was born.[5] She lived in Jobe, Oregon County, Missouri near the Alton post office. Her family continued to grow with Nancy, born in 1872, Susan, born in 1874, Andrew, born in 1877, and George Wells, born in 1878. In 1880, she lived in Mill Spring, Wayne County, Missouri.[6]

In 1885, she had another daughter, Rhoda Evelyn, and a son, Charles Vincent, in 1888.[7]

Rhoda died about 1900 in Missouri. She was buried at Bailey Cemetery in Alton, Oregon County, Missouri.[7]
