Patience Wells was born in Kentucky to Richard "Tidley" Wells Jr. and Jane Brown. Patience Wells was first cousin to Major James Kerr,who was an early settler and important figure in the founding of the Republic of Texas. Patience Wells married Peter Sapp in Pike County,Missouri. Two of their children were Margaret Sapp and James Sapp.The marriage ended in a divorce and she moved to Jackson County, Texas. Patience Wells Sapp married Samuel Shupe in Jackson County,Texas on July 20,1838. Samuel Shupe was a veteran of the Battle of San Jacinto. The children of Patience Wells Sapp and Samuel Shupe were Zerilda and Elizabeth R. Shupe. Samuel Shupe died in 1848 while sailing to New Orleans and was buried at sea. Patience then married Charles Simons in Jackson County, Texas on May 17, 1849.
