Joseph Benjamin Wells was born on 27 Feb 1739 in Sandown, Rockingham, New Hampshire. ^{[1] [2]} His parents were Jacob Wells (1710 - 1789) and Ruth (Sargent) Wells (1712 - ). His parents were married 12 Jul 1732 in Amesbury, Essex, Massachusetts ^{[3] [4] [5]}

His siblings were:
