Mr William Welch, whose death on the 13th ult., at the residence of his son-in-law at Green Island, has been already notified by us, was one of the old identities of the province of Otago, having arrived by the Philip Laing in 1848. After "roughing" it, as the rest of the pioneers had to do, for two years, he purchased land in the Green Island district, and manfully faced the difficulties of dealing, fencing, and breaking-up for crop, trusting to be able to grow what would be sufficient for himself and his family ; while latterly he gave his attention to dairying. He resided in the district for about 20 years, and during that time took an active interest in local matters, as a member of the road board and in other ways. Removing to the Shag Valley, where he carried on farming and dairying pursuits, he took a keen and intelligent interest in the affairs of the district, and sat almost continuously as a member of some school committee from the establishment of those bodies. He has left a widow and family, most of whom are grown up, to mourn the loss of a kind husband and indulgent father, while to his neighbours he was a warm and obliging friend.
