Research Notes

Popular Genealogies state she is the daughter of Philip Warfield and Nancy Anne (Purdy) Warfield. Two difficulties with this are (1) People did not use double names like "Nancy Anne" in the pre-revolutionary period; in fact, "Nancy" is a nickname for Anne. (2) It would be quite surprising in that era for a father named Warfield to give his daughter a last name "Welch". It mut be assumed, absent documenation to the contrary, that her father was named Welch, not Warfield. She became a Warfield by marriage to Seth.

Welsh-27 and Warfield-79 appear to represent the same person because: This is the daughter of Phillip Warfield and Nancy Anne Purdy, so her maiden name and profile name should be Warfield, If the names Hammond and Welsh are from marriages prior to Seth Warfield, the names should go in the 'other last names' field. I have not found any evidence that Philip Warfield had a daughter named Ruth; in fact at the moment he and his wife have 15 children, most of who have no documentation, which suggests that they have simply been added to his family to give them a home. The presence of a name like "Nancy Anne", which would not have been used in this time period (and Nancy was a nickname for Anne) suggests that the sources of the material are not reliable. The best explanation for Ruth getting the last name Warfield is that she acquired it by marriage to Seth. I have added improved sourcing to both Seth and Ruth; it is still not great because Find-a-Grave doesn't require sourcing the way WikiTree does.

Of course if we discover documentation that Ruth was really born a Warfield and the daughter of Philip and Anne, she can easily be reconnected!
