Merritt was born on 22 May 1825 [1]in Ripley County, Indiana, near the village of Napoleon. His parents moved to the vicinity of Milford, in Decatur County, Indiana when he was about three years of age.
Merit was a prominent citizen of Decatur County and in fact, in the sketch about Glanton G Welsh in Harding's 1915 Decatur county history, Merit is given more words than his son. [2]
He passed away in 17 Feb 1913 about three weeks after suffering a fall.[3][4]
