Biography

Mystery of the Missing Mother

Osa May Welch is the daughter of James Welch. She is listed in his household in the 1900 Census[1] and he is listed as her father in marriage records.[2] The 1900 census shows the wife as Chestoria Welch[1], but she and James were only married in January of 1900.[3] It is unlikely that they had a child for 13 years (plus two more) before getting married. Osa's marriage record to John Stonebrunner lists Gennata Ryan as her mother.[2], but additional information on this person is hard to find. Osa is 1 of 3 children on the 1900 census that belong to James, but are unlikely to belong to Chestoria Denis, the others being Mamie and Fletcher (I believe, the census taker seems to have written "Fltche").[1] I can't find any more information on Fletcher. I have found a Mamie Welch born to James Welch and Mary Barnet in December 1892 [4], but the 1900 census lists Mamie's birthdate as November 1892[1]. While this might be an allowable error, her birthplace is Summit County, Ohio. That is a long distance from Perry County, which is where every other piece of evidence for James and his family is located. It seems unlikely that this is the same Mamie. I'm still following leads that Mamie may have married a Green or a Lewis (Louis), but I've found nothing so far. So the question remains: Who is the mother of Osa, Fletcher(?), and Mamie Welch?
