1830 US Census - Medina Township, Medina County, Ohio
Medina County Gazette-December 2, 1881: another of our pioneer fathers has gone to his last home. A man identified in familiar with the growth and development of Medina for over 63 years. A man modest and retiring, yet known and loved far and wide. Sheldon B. Welton was born in Waterbury, Connecticut, August 10, 1795, and was baptized in his infancy. He worked in a clock factory in Winsted for seven years, and married there. When he was 23 years of age he started with his wife and sister-in-law, on July 1, 1818, for Ohio, and reached Weymouth on August 16 of the same year, traveling by ox cart. He settled in Baghdad; and where the Weymouth meeting house now stands, logged off 5 acres and sowed them to wheat in the same fall. Here he remained about seven years, when he exchanged places with his brother, Jacob R. Welton, and moved to the farm where he died. This place, also, he partially cleared. He was confirmed by Bishop Chase in 1819, and has ever since been a faithful, self-denying and consistent communicant in St. Paul's Church. His first wife died in 1849, and on April 14, 1851, he married Mrs. Sarah E. Tollman. His children by his first wife were; Norton W., Samuel N., and Sarah A. , late wife of P.C. Alcott. He had one child by his second wife, Charles McIlvaine Welton. His sons and wife survived him. Seldon B. Welton was a man of kindly disposition and genial hospitality, and given to hard work, even up to a comparatively short time before his death. He was a Vestryman and Warden in St. Paul's church for many years, regular and devout in his attendance at church, with full of zeal and good works. He was one of the most liberal and gifts, and deficient in work, of those who built the present church edifice of the Episcopal Church, and afterwards, when debt overhung the struggling parish, none were more self-sacrificing then he in lifting the burden.
