Biography

The youngest child of Joannes Adam Weppner and Anna Sabina Albert was "Carolus Augustinus Weppner" who was born 6 Dec 1783; baptized 7 December 1783 at Westhofen.[1][2] Augustus Weppner was calculated to be born in the year of 1783-1784 from his tombstone. His memorial written by family said he was born at Westhofen (in Germany). . [3] because his son-in-law, Phillip Born, is cited many times as being his nephew, and Phillip Born is the son of Eva Magdalena Weppner Born of Westhofen. It is estimated that she is likely Augustus's sister.[4]. Also Augustus's oldest son, Jacob Weppner, married the grand-daughter of his other sister, Sabina Born Lambert .(note: Jacob Weppner's wife was Emma Lambert, she is written up as his first cousin in Jacob Weppner's obituary. They married in Buffalo at St. Louis Church on September 1, 1848). The cousin connections interweaves a few times in this Weppner family back in Westhofen[5]

A first marriage was found for "Carol Augustinus Weppner" to Maria Margaretha Winter. [6] at Sankt Ignaz, Mainz, Rheinhessen, Hesse-Darmstadt (where one of his brothers married as well) on the 17th of July 1811; it clearly stated his father as "Adami Weppner" and his mother as "Sabinae Alberti". The bride, Margeretha Winter, was born in Weinolsheim, Oppenheim, Hessen. A death record was found for her at [7] at Weinolsheim. She was 20 years old when she was buried on the 21st of November, 1812. There appears to be no children from this union.

Augustus's second marriage was about 5 years later in Zell to Barbara Stumpf.

His first child, Anna Maria Weppner, was recorded as born and baptized on 10 July 1818 in Zell. [8] [9]

Immigration

The baptismal record of his son, John Weppner, [10] stated that the Weppner family "emigre Amerika der Juli 19".

Marriage

He married Barbara Stump of Zell, Bavaria as his second wife in Germany. His first four children were baptized and they lived in "Zell" where Augustus worked as a butcher. Then they moved to Petersheim (Pfeddersheim) in 1829. They left Petersheim in 1834 and arrived at New York on August 25th 1834. The family arrived in Buffalo, September 18 1834 where Augustus Weppner settled at the northwest Corner of Chippewa & Ellicott Streets. He then moved to Genesee and Ash Streets in 1836 where he established a butcher business. Augustus Weppner's wife Barbara Stumpf died first, and then he passed away in 1869, following the sad death of his son, John Weppner, who was a POW in the Civil War and who died injured in a prisoner's hospital.
His other two sons, Francis Weppner, and Arnold Weppner, continued the meat business after his death.

SYNAGOGUE

The Jewish community of Pfeddersheim was only founded in 1834 The Pfeddersheim Jews celebrated their services together beforehand, David Michel, who became Prase of the congregation in 1834, made a commitment in 1830 to allow the services to be held in his house free of charge for ten years."On April 20, 1834, the congregation succeeded at a very reasonable price to purchase a farm property with outbuildings from A. Weppner for 1230 guilders in order to set up a synagogue here. The official act of purchase is said to have taken place on May 10, 1834, and the notarial act is claimed by the Grand Ducal Provincial Directorate on May 10, 1834. The building ultimately cost 1,130 guilders.
