Melvin P. Werden, 83, of Morris, passed away Thursday, February 15, 2018 in Morris Hospital. Born July 13, 1934 in Charleston, IL, he was the son of Wilbur and Lietchia “Tiny” (Hall) Werden. Melvin was educated in Morris Schools and graduated from Morris Community High School with the Class of 1952. He proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1957-1959. He married Sandra C. Enger on November 21, 1959 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Morris. Sandra preceded him in death on September 3, 2017. Melvin was employed with the Morris Paper Mill, and then together with his wife in 1964, owned and operated Werden’s Tap in the 300 block of Liberty Street and Mello’s Fried Chicken at Rt 47 and Armstrong Street. They later started Werden Builders and Remodeling in the late 1970’s, retiring in 2000. He was an Illinois basketball fan, diehard Cubs fan, and followed Morris Redskins football. Melvin was a charter member of Lazy Acres Rec Club, and former member of Happy Hill Aerie #1024 in Morris. Survived by three sons, Randy (Kris) Werden, Daniel Werden, and Eric (Lori) Werden, all of Morris; 6 grandchildren: Michael, Hannah, Emma, Tessa, Jordan and Jacob; one great-grandson, Henry; two sisters, Denise (Doug) Stoltz and Arlene (Greg) Chasteen; and several nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his wife, Sandra, his parents, one sister in infancy, and sister, Billie Wickman. Visitation will be held Wednesday, February 21, 2018 from 3 to 7 p.m. at the U.C. Davis-Callahan Funeral Home. Enhanced video tributes will be played during the visitation. A Memorial Service will be held at the funeral home, Thursday, February 22, 2018 at 10 a.m., officiated by Pastor Steve Larson of the First Baptist Church of Morris. Inurnment will be at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Morris Color Guard. Memorial contributions may be made in Melvin’s name to the Morris Color Guard.
