Mathilde "Matilda" Werner aka Warner was born on 30 Oct 1889 in Staraja Huta, Gorodniza, Volhynia (currently: Stara Huta, Zhytomyr Oblast, Ukraine).[1][2] She was baptized on 3 Nov 1889 and the spelling on the baptism document is Starja Hutta. Her godparents were Daniel Faber and Anna Schulz. In researching the Volhynia area based upon the parents marriage and brother's births, this location was within the Emiltschin Parish in Volhynia.
Mathilde Werner Birth-Baptism
Matilda was confirmed at almost age 15 on 21 Mar 1904 in Hoffnungstal, Tiraspol, Kherson, Glückstal, South Russia (current location: Tsebrykove, Odessa Oblast, Ukraine). The confirmation record shows she was confirmed in Hoffnungstal by Pastor E. Cholodetzky who served the congregation from 1902 to 1907. The words on the side of the cross on the certificate are a quotation from 1 Timothy 1:15. On the right is a short prayer asking God to guide and protect the confirmand with his mighty hand.[3] This reflects that the family moved from the Volhynia area down to the Black Sea area to Hoffnungstal, South Russia (now Ukraine) by 1904. Her ship manifest confirms the district.
Matilda Werner's Confirmation
Wilhelm Krause had met Mathilde Werner, the German-Russian with the "black eyes", when she was about 12 (almost 13). They had about a twelve-year age difference. He came to America and worked steadily farming in the Beebe Draw area of La Salle, Colorado. For eight years, he worked to earn her passage to America to join him as his bride.
"GREELEY, Colo.. May 13.—For eight years William Krause was worked and saved with but one purpose in mind—to win a farm and a competence and save enough money to pay the passage to America of a black-eyed girl in Odessa. The girl in Odessa was only 13 when he left her, and he has not seen her since, but he remained true to his promise and his dreams were realized last night when, in the presence of the members of the German colony, pretty Matilda Werner, the girl with the black eyes, became his wife. The bride arrived the first of the week, having made the long trip from Odessa alone. Krause owns his own ranch in the Beebe Draw neighborhood."[4]
At age 20, Mathilde came to America departing Bremen on 8 Apr 1909 via S.S. Frankfurt arriving at the Galveston port on 2 May 1909. Her last residence was Hoffnungstal, Tiraspol and her destination was to her intended husband in La Salle, Colorado.[5][6]
Ten days after arriving in Galveston, Texas and traveling most likely by train to Colorado, Matilda married Wilhelm "William" Krause. They were married on 12 May 1909 in Greeley, Colorado.[7]
Together they had three children: Herman, Edna, and Florence, in Colorado.
After William's death Matilda remarried at age 50 to John Oster on 14 Sep 1940 in Greeley, Colorado.[8][9]

Documents from grandson to Matilda Werner Krause verify her confirmation location and more importantly her birth. Research with Mabel Kiessling, SGGEE Volhynia VC, along with parent's marriage and brother's birth records indicate this family moved from Volhynia to Baltic Sea area then back to Volhynia and onto Black Sea/Odessa area prior to immigration to the U.S. Additional records and research required to various groups. THANK YOU to cousins Karen Krause and Bill Hemple on this collaborative effort.
Cousin Karen Krause's communication to this profile's grandson reflects birth location as Hoffnungstal. Her grandson also says the name by AHSGR was listed as Nenke/Renke. Given that there can be Bessarbia and Glueckstal locations, my personal copies of Hoffnungstal, Bessarbia census records reflect the name Henke which could be the relation to this family. Odessa3.org records only list one Matilde Henke who married a Bollinger but she was born in 1908: Henke Mathilde 5 Jul 1908 Hoffnungstal [1]. I did various searches for Renke, Reinke (there is one but not a match), Henke, and all Matilda or Mathilde's and cannot locate close record.
Based upon my research, most likely Matilda was also born in Volhynia area but to date, no records can be located at Odessa3 or SGGEE site.
Her husband's obituary written in German indicates that he was born in Odessa, Südrußland which is Southern Federal District of Russia. I cannot locate an accurate birth record for Wilhelm Krause.
Christoph Werner's immigration record shows he and the family coming to "stepson Wilhelm Krause" (Matilda's husband) in La Salle, Colorado.
Step-son on the Christof Werner Ship manifest was a scribe error as the ship manifest reflects light pencil stating Wilhelm Krause was son-in-law and not stepson. 11 Apr 2023 Koreen Goodman
