Balthaser was born in 1817. He passed away in 1874.
In 1837, He came to America aboard "Barque Virginia" from Havre to New Orleans. Manifest shows him as 20 years old.

Served in Civil War with the Union Army, U S Grant Division as a butcher and cook, holding no rank, from 1861 to 1865 and saw many battles. His son Karl was with him, played violin and helped with chores. A flag which flew at Lookout Mountain is said to be in a descendant's possession to this day.
He is credited with building one of the first homes at Caseyville, IL in 1849.
Several of his relatives from Germany settled in New Orleans.
Many relatives are buried at the Caseyville Cemetery.
