Biography

Birth and parentage

Matheis was born on 15 September 1580 in Reinerzau, a village about 10 miles south of the place where the town of Freudenstadt, Duchy of Württemberg, was founded in 1599. He was the son of Michael Werner and his wife Catharina (Baumann) Werner from Reinerzau.[1]

Marriages

Marriage to Anna Frick

Matheis was probably married to Anna (Frick) Werner.[2] According to the baptism register of Reinerzau, their children were:

  1. Maria, bapt. 21 July 1616 in Reinerzau.
  2. Catharina, bap1. 1 December 1617 in Reinerzau.
  3. Barbara, bapt. 11 July 1620 in Reinerzau.
  4. Johannes, bapt. 1 January 1623 in Reinerzau.

Marriage to Maria Graf

Matheis was probably married to Anna (Graf) Werner, the daughter of Hannß Graf from Wälde, parish of Dornhan near Oberndorf am Neckar, Duchy of Württemberg. According to the baptism register of Reinerzau, their children were:[3]

  1. Michael, bapt. 15 November 1624 in Reinerzau,[4] married (i) Lucia Schäfer from Reinerzau 11 November 1651 in Reinerzau,[5] (ii) Anna Heinzelmann from Reinerzau 28 October 1672 in Reinerzau, [6] died before 12 June 1693 in Reinerzau.
  2. Martin, bapt. 2 December 1625 in Reinerzau.
  3. Johannes, bapt. 17 August 1630 in Reinerzau.
  4. Barbara, bapt. 11 January 1634 in Reinerzau.
  5. Matthias, bapt. 19 December 1636 in Reinerzau.
  6. Georg, bapt. 15 July 1639 in Reinerzau.

Death

Matheis' date of death is unknown due to the lack of a burial record. According to the baptism register of Reinerzau, Matheis was mentioned as godfather of a baptized child for the last time on 27 June 1647.

Research notes

In the absence of corresponding records, there is uncertainty regarding the assignment of Mattheis Werner, baptized 15 September 1580, to the marriages mentioned above. At the parish of Reinerzau there are no marriage records from the time before 1651. It is therefore not completely provable beyond doubt that the Matheis Werner mentioned in the above cited baptismal records as the father of the children is the Matheis Werner baptized on 15 September 1580 in Reinerzau.
However, the following circumstances speak for it:

  • In the period from 1577 to 1608 only one person with the name Matheis (or Matthew or Matthias) Werner is mentioned in the records of Reinerzau, namely the one baptized on 15 September 1580. Matthias Werner, who was baptized on January 11, 1608, was certainly too young to marry Anna Frick in view of the dates of birth of the above-mentioned children, and he was probably also too young to marry Maria Graf.
  • Since no more children of a married couple Matheis Werner and Anna (Frick) Werner were baptized after the child Johannes Werner (bapt. on 1 January 1623), there are good reasons to believe that Anna died after the birth of Johannes and Matheis married Maria (Graf) Werner, who gave birth to their first child (Michael, bapt. on 15 November 1624) in November 1624.
  • There was also continuity for the most part with regard to the godparents:
    • Benedict Schwenck, Hanß Schwenck and Margretha Waltz were the godparents at all the baptisms of the children of the Matheis and Anna couple.
    • Benedict Schwenck was also godfather of all 6 children of the married couple Matheis and Maria. Margretha Waltz was godmother of 4 of their 6 children, and instead of Hanß Schwenck, Martin Schwenck was godfather of all 6 children of Matheis and Maria.
  • Günther Frey (Ortssippenbuch Reinerzau - see source information below) evaluated an inventory document dated 29 May 1650, which shows that Matheis Werner had married Maria Graf, the daughter of Hannß Graf from Wälde, about 25 years ago and that Matheis had previously been married without children. With regard to the statement that the marriage was childless, one may assume that this can also mean the case that children were born in the marriage, but they did not survive infancy.

  2. Whether the above mentioned Matheis Werner, bapt. 15 September 1580, is the husband of Anna (Frick) Werner is not certain (see research notes). The date of the marriage is unknown, since no marriage records from before 1651 exist at the parish of Reinerzau.Anna's maiden name Frick is mentioned in some of the baptismal records of the children listed.
