Samuel and Mary Umiker and their family were the caretakers of a castle at Thalheim and worked the vineyard. Susan Umiker told her children that she and her brothers stomped the grapes to make the wine.
First to come across the Atlantic Ocean were Samuel and his sons, Abraham and Jacob, settling on a farm in Kansas. Sometime later his wife (Mary Wernli) and daughter (Susan) and son (John) followed along with their cousins, Sophia and Mary (Marie) Wernli. The voyage across the Atlantic took six weeks. His wife Mary spent the entire voyage in bed as she was frightfully seasick from the time the ship sailed until they arrived in New york Harbor. They came steerage and were so happy when they caught sight of the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor. They were detained for a short while on Ellis Island. They joined the menfolk on the farm in Kansas.
Later Samuel Umiker and his three sons each took adjoining homesteadsnear Toutle, Washington (at the base of Mt. St. Helens).
