Curriculum Vitae

ACADEMIC HISTORY:

• Doctor of Arts in Biology, May 1993 Idaho State University, Pocatello, ID 1990–93 Scholarly activity: A study of the effect of an interactive videodisc autotutorial workstation versus the effect of a study guide/workbook on the academic performance of students in BIOS 101, General Zoology. The Doctor of Arts (DA) degree is a unique degree designed around the need for excellence in college teaching. It emphasizes a breadth of background in biology through biology course work and substantive consideration of pedagogy through supervised teaching internships, biology education courses, and seminars which focus on the effective communication of biological concepts to students. Research is also an important emphasis of the DA degree: in particular, the program promotes a sound understanding of scientific inquiry through research experience.

• Master of Arts in Education (Community College Curriculum and Instruction), December 1982 San Diego State University, San Diego, CA 1981–82 Master's paper: The evolution of college general biology: From the sixties to the present.

• Master of Science in Biological Sciences, June 1977 California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, CA 1975–77 Master's thesis: A multivariate study of thermal acclimation in the juvenile red abalone, Haliotis rufescens.

• Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences (Concentration in Zoology), June 1974 California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, CA 1971–74 Senior project: Physiological effects of intermittent photic stimulation (IPS) on rats: An experimental design.

AWARDS:

• Distance Education and Instructional Technology Grant, Linn-Benton Community College, Fall 1997

• Distance Education and Instructional Technology Grant, Linn-Benton Community College, Summer 1997

• Associated Students of Idaho State University Discretionary Scholarship, Fall Semester 1990

• Doctor of Arts Fellowship and Tuition and Fee Scholarship, Idaho State University, academic years 1990–91, 1991–92, and 1992–93

• Dean's List, California Polytechnic State University, Spring Quarter 1974

CREDENTIAL:

The California Community Colleges Instructor Credential (Biological Sciences), issued October 1981 (valid for life)

PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND INTERESTS:

Broad academic background in the biological sciences, with an emphasis in animal physiology.

19 years of teaching experience at six different community colleges and a state university. Expertise in the process of science, with primary interest in college teaching of general biology, human anatomy and physiology, marine biology, oceanography, zoology, and environmental biology.

Also very interested in instructional technology (e.g., computer-managed presentation, data acquisition, and autotutorial instruction, and computer simulation lab experiences) and distance education. Served on several committees, including: the San Diego Mesa College Academic Computing Committee (October 1986–June 1990), during which was closely involved in the development of Phase I and II Computer Master Plans for SDMC; the Tenure Committee for Dr. Jack Rose (Department of Biological Sciences, ISU, Fall 1991); the accreditation committees for the LBCC Agriculture and Biology Departments, and Dental Assistant Program (1995–96); the Professional Development Advisory Committee of LBCC (1995–96); the Distance Education & Instructional Technology Committee of LBCC (1995–2001; serving the last two years on the Curriculum and Assessment Subcommittee). Was co-chair of the Core Curriculum and Assessment Committee (June 2001–May 2003) of the Human Anatomy & Physiology Society and coordinator of the HAPS Learning Outcomes Project (06/00–05/03).
