Biography
Marlyn (Wescoff) Metzler is Notable.
Marlyn was born in 1922. She graduated from West Philadephia High School in 1938, and in 1942 graduated from Temple University.[1] After graduation she was hired by the University of Pennsylvania's Moore School of Engineering to perform weather calculations.[1]
The Moore School of Engineering was funded by the US Army during World War II, and Marlyn was selected as one of the "Top Secret Rosies" to manually calculate ballistic trajectories. She was one of the female human "computers" who sent their complex calculations to the Army's Ballistics Research laboratory at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland. When the Army decided to fund an experimental project in 1945 – the first all-electronic digital computer – Marlyn was one of six women ‘computers’ selected to be its first programmers. In 1997, Marlyn was inducted into the Women in Technology International Hall of Fame with the five other original programmers of the ENIAC.
On 2 Feb 1947, Marlyn married Philip Meltzer in Philadelphia. They were united in marriage by Rabbi Issachar Levin.[2] The couple raised one son and one daughter. Marlyn Meltzer died in 2008 and is buried in Fountain Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery, Ewing Township, Mercer, New Jersey. [3]
