Biography

Andrew Wesley arrived from Portsmouth in Australia aged 21 years old, as an Assisted Immigrant on the ship the "Commonwealth" on the 22 Jun 1877 as a single man. He was recorded as a miner and could read and write, and was a Wesleyan Methodist[1]. He had travelled with Ann Wesley, aged 51, and his sister, Josepha Wesley, 19.

Andrew married Alvina Isabella Scherf in 1880, the marriage registered at Vegetable Creek (later known as Emmaville), NSW[2].

They had children[3]:

Andrew was a mine foreman and at one time, with his brothers, owned the 'Garden Palace' mine[4].

Andrew died in 1935 at Sandringham, NSW,[5], his death registered at Rockdale, NSW[6]. He is buried in the Woronora Memorial Park cemetery in Sutherland, NSW[7].

OBITUARY: MR. ANDREW WESLEY'S DEATH[9]

"THE GARDEN PALACE"
The death in Sydney last night of Mr. Andrew Wesley revives memories of "The Garden Palace," an Emmaville district mine which yielded great wealth in an earlier day. 'The Garden Palace" was owned by the late Mr. Andrew Wesley and his two brothers, Mr. Charles Wesley and "Captain" Wesley, and a great quantity of valuable mineral was won. Subsequently the late Mr. Andrew Wesley selected' the grazing area In the Emmaville district which is now owned by Mr. Charles Scherf and, as "Big Ben", is noted for its production of high quality wool. After following grazing pursuits for some years, Mr. Wesley carried on a butchering business in Glen Innes. subsequently retiring and taking up residence in Lismore, after which he went to live with his daughter at Sandringham. The late Mr: Wesley, who was 80 years of age, had been in failing health for the last two years. Surviving are his widow, a member of the Scherf family of Emmaville; seven daughters — Mesdames Harry Colditz (Hamilton, Newcastle), W. A. Dibley (Glen Innes), Ben Colditz (Kogarah), E. Small (Carris Creek, Grafton), R. Tapp (Sandringham, Sydney), Bert Petersen (Monto. Q.>, and McCauley, of Coraki ; and one son, Mr. Squire Wesley. Three sons predeceased their father —John, Andrew, and Charles, a dentist of Boggabri, who died some years ago. Mrs. Dibley is at present in Sydney, and Mr. Dibley leaves this afternoon to be present at the funeral, which takes place to-morrow afternoon.
