Charles West was born 27 Mar 1814 in Ash, Kent, to William West, bricklayer, and Maria Prett. He married Mary Baker in Thanington, Kent, on 18 Nov 1854., giving his occupation as writer. They had two children born in Kent before emigrating to Australia, arriving in Sydney on the Java on 27 Apr 1853.

Charles West was occupier of a house in Bank Street, Belfast, Victoria, in the early 1850s. He appears in the Belfast Electoral Roll of 1856 as a labourer living in James Street.

Charles appears in the Occupiers Rolls as living in 6 James St., Fizroy in 1867 and in Argyle Place, Carlton in 1870. One of William and Jane Cain's sons, Alfred James Cain, was born in Argyle Terrace, Cardigan Street, Carlton, on 4 Nov 1868. Charles' youngest daughter Grace gave her address as Cardigan Street when she married on 7 Mar 1868.
