Biography

Charles West served in the United States Civil War.
Side: CSA
Regiment(s): 2nd Virginia Cavalry

Charles West was born April 14, 1824 to Charles West and Mary "Polly" Frazier in Campbell County, Virginia. His parents were wed in 1813 in Campbell County and father Charles shown as head of house in 1830 and 1840 censuses of Campbell.

In 1850 Charles was living with his parents, still in Campbell County, with six of his siblings.

Charles married Sallie Ann Fox between 1850 and 1852, and the 1860 census, Campbell, would show the couple with their first three children, and also show brother Whitfield was living with them.

The 1860, 1870 census and a birth record show the couple had at least the following children:

  1. William Thomas 1853
  2. Sallie Anne 1856
  3. Venitia A. 1858
  4. Charles 1861
  5. Whitfield W. 1863
  6. Viola 1872

Charles West's Findagrave page has links for his father, wife, four of five children, and five of possibly eleven siblings.

At least three of Charles' brothers; Whitfield and Washington West, would enlist in the CSA in the Civil War, and be with the 34th Infantry, Company G. Both were captured and sent to Elmira prison in New York. Washington West died of pneumonia at Elmira. Brother Christopher was in the 10th Virginia Artillery, and per headstone request, died in Richmond in April of 1865.

I believe Charles enlisted with the 2nd Virginia Cavalry, Company I. There is a record for a Charles West enlisting in that unit in August of 1863, but age was not given. Company I did consist predominately of men from Campbell County.

Charles appears on page 42 in the 1860 census of west Campbell County. 10 other men shown on pages 39-43 would join the 2nd Cavalry, Company I, including ROBERT A. SNOW and his cousin ALLEN B. SNOW.
