Harry was born in the Gandhi Ashram in Phoenix Durban. His father Albert was a printer and ran the settlement and the Indian Pioneer for some years. Harry married Thelma Sneddon and had one child Sheldene West born approx. 1940.
He later married Marjorie Schaack in Johannesburg and had a daughter Pamela F West born 30-11-1946 and a son Michael D West born 13-5-1949. He practiced architcture in Johannesburg and Pretoria until his death in 1974.
