Biography

Thomas was born in 1890. He was the son of Frederick West and Charlotte Scott. He passed away in 1961 and is buried in St John the Baptist Churchyard, Tunstall.

Thomas Frederick West emigrated to Australia with his mother and his brother Stewart on the SS Zealandic from Liverpool 1911-10-29, according to family tradition their sister Lucy was already there, she had gone ahead before the death of her father in Feb 1908, , however, there was a Lucy West on the ship with them and of the same age as his sister Lucy. Family tradition also states that his brothers Sidney and Frederick sailed with them however they are not on the ships manifest. The SS Zealandic arrived in Fremantle harbour on 1911-12-07 where Charlotte and her 2 or 3 children disembarked, the ship then continued on its was to Port Adelaide arriving 1911-12-12

the SS Zealandic's manifest also shows that Thomas and his mother had Diphtheria

WW1 he was in the ANZACS service number 2256, 11th battalion. He returned to England, for convalescence after being wounded in the at Gallipoli. He met Beatrice Gertrude Lurcock, they later married in 1917-09-08.

After leaving the Australian army, he became the gardener for the Convent of the Nativity on the corner of London Road and Ufton Lane in Sittingbourne, Kent until his retirement. Up until the bombing of the Covent in WW2 the family lived on the grounds, the bombing destroyed all the family had. Later the family moved to Park Drive, Tunstall near Sittingbourne.
