Biography
James was born in 1825 in Fivehead, Somerset. He was baptised Dec 25th. He joined the army in 1847 and served in the Crimean War. In 1862 his regiment was posted to Canada. His wife and children accompanied him. They lived in Halifax and then Haldimand County in Ontario. In 1869 he was discharged from the army and sought a land grant. All British soldiers were entitled to a free grant of land at that time. He and his family settled at Bear Cave (just outside Rosseau, Ontario. He passed away in 1891.
