Fannin County Records

According to the Fannin County: Family Pages of this family;

William Pearson "W. P." West was born in Washington Co., Arkansas on 7 Apr 1841 to James Sanders West and Mary Armstrong Crawford West.

He enlisted in the Confederate Army on 12 Oct 1861 at Fayetteville.

He served with the 1st Battalion Cavalry, Company E. He was wounded once across the neck and a second in the knee which left his leg permanently crippled.

My father, James E. West told me that W.P. had the nickname of "Figure 4" because the wound in his knee made that one leg draw up slightly and to look at him sideways while he was standing looked like the number 4.

He married first Mary Jane Campbell 23 Feb 1871 in Boonesboro, Arkansas. They had 2 children together - Annie K. born in 1874 and Lillie Etta born March 9, 1876. Mary Jane died in childbirth in 1879.

W.P. married my great grandmother, Sarah Julina Womack on 5 May 1880 at Viney Grove, Washington Co., Arkansas. Sarah was called Sally and was born on 5 Jan 1859. She was the daughter of William C. Womack and Elizabeth Corder Womack.

W.P., Sally & the 2 girls moved to Ravena, Fannin Co., Texas sometime during of 1880. The 1880 Washington Co., Arkansas, census shows them still in Arkansas when their household was enumerated 12 Jun 1880 [Series: T9 Roll: 58 Page: 622]. Sarah had received a Texas land grant - #1155. W.P. & Sally homesteaded part of the land grant and built their house there. In later years it became known as the "old West homeplace." W.P. & Sally had 12 children together. The 2 from W.P.'s first marriage made 14. W.P.'s & Sally's children were:

1. James Edgar (my Dad) b 3 Jul 1924

(see below for more details)

2. Helen Ruth b 31 Dec 1925

We called Joe & Della, Papa Joe and Momma Della. Joe & Della divorced in the early 1940's. Momma Della moved to Dallas and was an LVN and worked after her retirement from nursing at The Torch restaurant in Dallas. Papa Joe had many talents. In his early years he was a bank teller. He ran an exchange at a military base in Peyote, TX during WWII. He and my father owned and ran a gas station in Howe, Tx after the war. Then Papa Joe opened up another business in Howe - a repair shop that he named "Joe's Fix-It Shop." Papa Joe could repair anything. Grandma Sally accidentally dropped him off the front porch when he was a baby and as a result of that he had a hunchback. He was babied as he was growing up because of the fall. He said that in his younger days he was a "hellion" because he didn't expect to live very long. He was a wonderful grandfather and thought that grandkids could do no wrong. James Edgar West graduated from Bonham High. He served in WWII in the Army. He married Melba Jean Hays on 1 May 1947 in Bonham. They had 2 children: Cynthia Jo & Gloria Jean (me) Mom died 29 Oct 2003 in Sherman TX at Wilson N. Jones Hospital. Dad died Jan 31 Jan 2004 at Walls Regional Hospital in Cleburne, TX.
