Biography

Matilda was born in 1839, the daughter of Simeon West and Mary Paine. [1] She passed away in 1919. Matilda was born and grew up in Cheshire England. She was a seamstress who worked for one of the Royal Princesses according to her granddaughters Linda Bartram (nee Lewis), Meg Graham (nee Lewis) and Anne Height (Nancy nee Lewis) who all had cloth handbags sewn by Matilda. She married her husband James Lewis in England and she remained in England when her parents and siblings emigrated to Australia. She later with her husband James and children emigrated to Australia arriving in Sydney on the "Surrey" in 1875. Her grandchildren described her as a very strict and serious Jewess.

Matilda may have accompanied her cousin Sarah West (aged 17) when she was 14 in 1853 on a trip to Australia on the "Hope", to visit Sarah's mother who was then living in Victoria. She visited her grandfather William Payne in Tasmania. Matilda returned to her family in England where she married James Lewis in 1860 on the 11 March at Warrington in Lancashire.

Matilda West's dna is confirmed by ancestry.com Thru Lines in which three descendants of Matilda match thirty eight other descendants of her siblings. (7 August 2020).
