Biography

James West was born before 1728. Every record for James West in Bladen, Duplin, Sampson, and Robeson Counties of North Carolina lists his names as "James West." There is no middle name or middle initial.

James West was born by 1728. He lived in the North Carolina counties of Duplin, (later Sampson), Bladen, and Robeson.

Records suggest James West may have moved to South Carolina in his later years. He may be the James West, who is listed in the 1790 Prince Georges, Georgetown, SC census with son-in-law Elmore Carter (wife Delilah West). James West made entry for land in Anson County, NC in 1796. His son-in-law Elmore Carter was living in Kershaw County, SC when he sold James West's Anson land on January 25, 1800. The 1800 Kershaw County, SC census lists a James and Joel West, presumed to be James and his son Joel.

Is it not proven that James West moved to South Carolina in his later years. However, there are records for his son-in-law Elmore Carter (wife Delilah West) and his daughter Lucretia (husband McKinney Soles) in Prince Georges, Georgetown, SC and Liberty, Marion County, SC. These SC counties bordered Robeson County, North Carolina.

On August 8, 1794, James West made a Deed of Gift to his son Isham in Robeson Co., NC. James West signed his name to the deed. Arthur Braswell and James' sons, Joel and Britain witnessed the deed. Arthur Braswell and Joel West witnessed with their marks, and Brittain West signed his name. (Robeson Co., NC Deed Book E, pp 98,99) .

On August 27, 1794, James' son, Joel West, was a chain carrier for Arthur Braswell in Robeson County.

Arthur Braswell was the brother of Patience Braswell, who is believed to be the wife of James West.

Wife of James West

James West's wife may have been Patience Braswell, daughter of William Braswell and Margaret Braswell. This is suggested by genealogical records and autosomal dna.

William Braswell wrote his will on March 4, 1785. The will was probated in 1785 in Nash County, North Carolina, William Braswell named his children: Jacob, Arthur, Patience West, Dorcas Hooks, Pattey Bridgers, and Samuel.

James West's daughter Lucretia married McKinney Soles, who died around 1798, Lucretia is listed as "Crissey Soles" in the 1800 census for Liberty, Marion County, SC with Dorcas (Braswell) Hooks, the sister of Patience and Arthur Braswell. Dorcas married William Hooks. Land records for Marion County, SC suggest William and Dorcas Hooks lived near the Robeson County, North Carolina border of Marion County, SC.

By 1810, Crissey West Soles moved back to Robeson County, NC and was listed in the next household. (1810 Robeson County, NC census)

On September 30, 1796, James West entered 250 acres on Richardsons Creek, beginning on Meadow Branch, in Anson County, NC. The land was issued on October 11, 1803. On April 9, 1803, James West deeded the Anson County land to his son-in-law, Elmore Carter (wife Delilah West), of Kershaw County, SC. James West signed with his legal signature. On January 25, 1800, Elmore Carter of Kershaw SC sold this land to John Bennett of Anson County.

The 1800 Kershaw Co., SC census lists a James and Joel West. It is possible that this is our James West and his son Joel. James West would have been at least 72 years old in 1800. More research is needed to prove this was our West line in Kershaw County, SC.

James' son, Brittain West, wrote his will on November 8, 1828 in Perry Co., Missouri. Brittain named all of his siblings and his sisters' spouses in his will.
