Biography

................ "An Honest Man is the Noblest Work of God"

Jacob West was born in 1824. He was the son of Levi West and Elizabeth Barrot.

James Monroe was President of the United States when Jacob was born, only the 5th to have held the office at the time. There were 22 Presidents during his lifetime, [1] including Andrew Jackson, Abraham Lincoln, and Ulysses S. Grant, and Teddy Roosevelt. Jacob lived in the South during the U.S. Civil War, and bore witness along with the rest of the nation when Presidents Lincoln and Garfield were assassinated. The African Slave Trade was in full swing when he was born and by his death Jacob had survived the era of Reconstruction, the re-integration of the South into the Union, and the turn of the 20th Century.

Jacob was married to Phariba E. Williford at age 23 and fathered at least 8 children before dying at age 82, widowing his second wife Mary Bolton.

Jacob lived in Westville, where he operated the U.S. Post Office. He donated the land on which the original Bethel Baptist Church was built. Jacob West passed away in 1906 at age 82 and is buried in the 'Old' Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery , now referred to as the Old West Graveyard. [2]

Hi! The nonmigrating ancestor template was edited (at the source/template level) to remove "Native" ... because of the privacy level, I can't add "Native" to the text of the template used on this profile. Just add "Native" after location= from the Edit tab. Thanks!
