Biography

Levi West's census listings are as follows:

• 1820 Samuel West household shows male 16-18^[1]

• 1830 in his own household, aged 20-29, one of two white males of this age^[2]

• 1850 in his own household aged 48^[3]

• 1860 in his own household aged 58^[4]

• 1870 in his own household aged 68 (incorrectly transcribed by Ancestry as 63; “Midower” middle name used by some researchers probably derived from note “widower” in this listing) ^[5]

Ancestry incorrectly transcribed his age in the 1870 census as 63 but examination of the handwritten document shows that it reads age 68, consistent with other census entries.^[6] It is possible that his entry for that year was annotated as "widower" leading to the otherwise unattributed middle name of "Midower" cited by some researchers. In that year he was indeed alone.
