Biography

Flag of Virginia
Robert West lived in Virginia.
This profile is part of the West Name Study.

Robert was born about 1766 and died 24 Nov 1816. He was buried in Babcock Cemetery, Appomattox, Virginia.[1]

Among his children by his presumptive second wife, Mary Beverly Grymes were (children by his first wife are discussed in the Research Notes):

  1. Ann M (West) Carper, traditionally known as Anna Maria (West) Carper
  2. Robert West

They were both living in the household of Ann's husband, Joseph V Carper, in 1860.[2]

The other child of the presumptive second marriage (see Research Notes for the scant evidence of his first marriage) includes:

  1. Ariana (West) Rosser (1812-1875)

Research Notes

Possible Origins

William B. West (1735-1815) and Letitia (Martin) West (1735-1784) may be his parents; however, no sources that describe their issue have yet been documented.

First Marriage and Children

  • Some researchers ascribe an apparent first marriage to Elizabeth Carter KcKeand (sic) (McKean) (1773-1807), in which case, the children born before 1807 are Elizabeth's children. Some evidence for children by this marriage exists:
    • Elizabeth (West) Beadles born in Virginia about 1802, alive in both the Louisa County 1850 and 1860 census
    • Letitia Martin (West) Stout born in Gloucester, Virginia about 1804 who married in Louisa County in 1828 and was living during the Louisa County census in 1850 and Culpeper, Virginia census in 1860, 1870 and 1880, but her parents of Virginia were reported out as unknown at her 1888 Stevensburg, Culpeper County death[3]
    • John William West (circa 1805-1877)
  • The marriage to Mary Beverly Grymes is attributed to 30 Nov 1809, but no matching document confirms this.
  • No one had previously attributed a son Robert West, but the appearance in the 1860 census in Ann M (West) Carper's household with her husband of a person named Robert West could alternatively mean the Robert lived a very long life (and that his death is incorrectly described), but the most likely scenario is that it was a son also named Robert West. Noting also that Mary Beverly (Grymes) West Francisco died allegedly in 1859. A less likely scenario could be that John William West (1805-1877) from Robert's first marriage was that Robert's father, but that John W or M West had his own household in Bedford, Virginia in 1860.
