Deborah was born 18 September 1729 in Tisbury, Dukes County, Province of Massachusetts Bay,[1] the daughter of Thomas West and Drusilla Presbury. "Deborah, daughter [of] Thomas and Drusilla, [died] Jan. 25, 1733 or 4. [Jan. 25, 1733, a. 4 y. 4 m. 7 d. GR6(=Company Place Cemetery, Vineyard Haven)].[2][3]
NOTE RE DEATH YEAR: Town record recites "1733 or 4." Given that the month of death was January, then the year old style was 1733; the year new style was 1734. Her gravestone apparently gave the death year as 1733 only. (All except the year of death is now visible; when the vital record book was published in 1910, the year must have been visible.) Deborah's birth year is a separate town record, and does recite September 18, 1729. The age on the gravestone of "4 years 4 Mo. 7 Ds", when added to the birth date yields January 25, 1734. Either the year of death on the gravestone is old style, or the age at death is in error. It is more likely that the death date is old style (given the January death month); the date of death in the data section of the profile has been changed to 1734 to indicate its high probability.
