Biography

Thomas West, son of Francis West and Susanna (Soule) West, and grandson of Mayflower immigrant George Soule, was born in North Kingstown, Rhode Island, New England, on 18 Sept 1684.[1]

Thomas married Dorcas Rathbun/Rathborn on 20 Sept 1716 in New Shoreham, Rhode Island (Block Island). [2] Dorcas was born in New Shoreham 14 Jan 1695, daughter of William and Sarah (______) Rathbone. The will of William Rothbone, of Westerly, Rhode Island and Block Island, date 18 Sep 1727 names dau. Dorcas West[1].

25 Jan 1722/3 William Rathbone of Block Island and his wife Sarah gave (for love) Thomas and Dorcas West 20 acres in Westerly, Rhode Island. 16 Dec 1728, Thomas Weast, laborer of Jamestown, Rhode Island sold this land to John Rathburn. He sold some other land to Ebenezer Rathbone[1].

There was no death date listed by the Soule book, so presumably there is no town record of his death, but the date would be after 16 Dec 1728 listed above. If the sale of the above land was in preparation for removing somewhere else, then he would not have died in Rhode Island or Massachusetts.

Children of Thomas and Dorcas (Rathborn) West, born in New Shoreham, Rhode Island:

  1. Ichabod, born 20 June 1717 or 1718. He may have gone to Dutchess County, New York[1]. An Ichabod West is on a tax list in 1648.
  2. Thomas, born 26 June 1720.[1].

I'm seeing an unsourced assertion on Find A Grave for William West b. 1745 (https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/125160298/william-west)

that this profile's Thomas West son of Susannah Soule had a son named Timothy West (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/West-22902) who was the father of William West .

I can't find a way to confirm or deny this assertion and wonder if anyone might look into it and make the wikitree connections if this is provable.

p.s. FYI Arnold's Records, Vol. 5 confirms Thomas's birth at North Kingstown and parents being Francis and Susannah. (https://archive.org/details/cu31924098819984/page/n159/mode/2up?q=west)

Find a grave has the descent wrong. According to Mayflower Society Pink Books William s/o Timothy #657 (note I created a dup), s/o Francis #152, s/o Francis #29/ s/o Susuanah (Soule) West, d/o George Soule. When the duplicates are merged the correct descent will be on Wikitree.

Birth records for sons Ichabod and Thomas. Should profiles be created for them?

If you'd like to create them, that would be fine Faylene. They are born after the 1700 cutoff date for the Mayflower Project's scope, so they won't be managed by the project.

I do notice there's another Ichabod West which also mentions Dutchess Co., NY, so it may be wise to make sure that both profiles are well sourced to keep them from being confused with each other.
