Biography

1706 Birth and Parentage

She was born on August 28, 1706 in Bristol County, Massachusetts Bay.

She was the daughter of John West and Renew Carpenter. Her parents were married on 4 December 1703 in Swansea, Bristol, Province of Massachusetts Bay.[1]

1727: Probate Court Appoints a Guardian

Bristol, Massachusetts Probate Records note the appointment of Job Carpenter of Swansea as guardian of Renew West, granddaughter of Benjamin Carpenter of Swansea. The appointment is dated August 28, 1727. [6:16]. [2]

This appointment suggests some type of required explanation because it is dated on Renew West's 21st birthday, the moment when one might imagine a guardian is no longer required.

One theory would be that her father had already died by this time, and since a woman lost her independence and ability to protect her own interests at the time of marriage, a guardian of her interests would be appointed at the time she was about to marry. If this theory is correct, it could help place a date for her marriage.

Marriage

Renew West married John Lippett.

Children

Hannah Lippett was shown as being born in Rhode Island in 1725. This would, however, be two years before the probate record referred to Renew by her unmarried name.
