Baptism: 18 JUL 1825. St Michael, Houghton Le Spring, County Durham, England. Son of Robert and Ann Westmoreland. Father a pitman of High Downs.[1]

In 1825 Matthew's brother Robert died and in 1827, Robert's widow Ann also died leaving their surviving 6 children as orphans. It seems that Matthew and his wife Jane took in their nieces and nephews and took care of them until they were old enough to fend for themselves. [2]
