At the Central Waterworks' Company's mine on the29th ult., a serious accident happened. Two miners named David'Jones and David Weston, and the manager, Mr.' Horne stepped on to a bucket which was to be lowered to the next level. Immediately they got on the bucket it ran away at a rapid rate. The three men were thrown off when the bottom was reached, Horne fracturing his ankle, and Weston having his foot crushed. Strange to say, Jones escaped without anyother injury than a good shaking; indeed- it was almost miraculous that the whole of the party were not instantaneously killed. The bucket is lowered by means of a brake to the engine, which it is stated, was fastened after the men had been pulled to the 200 feet level; it is evident, however, that either the brake could not have been properly fastened or was out of repair, for, as soon as the weight of the three men was on the bucket it rapidly descended the shaft.
