Biography

Richard Weston, Judge of the Common Pleas, of Skreens in Roxwell, co. Essex was the second son of John Weston of Lichfield and his wife Cecilia Neville.[1][2][3][4] He was born around 1513 based on his admittance to Oxford.
Richard Weston entered Oxford about 1529, and received his B.C.L on 17 February 1532/3.[5] Little is known of his early career in law. He was a reader at the Inner Temple in 1554.
On 20 November 1557, Weston was appointed solicitor-general, a position which ended on the death of Queen Mary in 1558. On 26 January 1559 he was created serjeant-at-law, and served most of the year as Queen's Sergeant.[6] In October 1559, he was made a justice of the Common Pleas.[7] From this time until his death he occurs in numerous records in his capacity as a judge.
Soon after dissolution of Oseney Abbey in 1639, Judge Richard Weston acquired the advowson of Bucknell, co. Oxford from King Henry VIII.[8] In 1672, Richard Weston willed the advowson of Bucknell to his son Jerome Weston.[9] Two years later, Jerome Weston gave the Bucknell advowson to his aunt Alice Ball of Lichfield for "diverse reasons and considerations especially moving to me."[10] The wording of the deed reveals that it was a gift without payment. In 1578, Alice Ball gave the advowson to her son Robert Ball. This is more evidence confirming the relationship between the Westons of Roxwell and the Westons of Lichfield.
On 3 October 1560, Richard Weston and Margaret his wife purchased the manor and advowson of Nettleswell, co. Essex along with land in Parndon Magna, Parndon Parva, Latton, and Harlo from John Hingham.[11] They then jointly sold land on 14 April 1561 in Alfryston, Bepton, Bercombe, Branbroughe, Chedham, Ertham, Estgrenestede, Felpham, Goring, Hene, Kyngeston, Lyndefeild, Myddleton, Thornewik, and West Meston, co. Sussex.[12][13] In his will, he possessed the manors of Frayes, Long Barrows, Netteswell, Skreens, St. Lawrence, and a moiety of West Tylbury.[14]
Richard Weston was married three times. His first wife was Wilburga Catesby who died 1553. She was a daughter of Anthony Catesby of Whiston, Northamptonshire, and widow of Richard Jenour (d. 1548) of Great Dunmow, Essex, clerk of the court of surveyors. In November 1550, he purchased the wardship of Andrew Jenour, the heir of Richard Jenour. They had one son and one daughter. His second wife was Margaret Barnaby, daughter of Eustace Burneby, and the widow of Thomas Addington. They had one son and two daughters. Finally, he married Elizabeth Lovett, daughter of Thomas Lovett of Astwell, Northants., and widow of Anthony Cave of Chicheley, Bucks. and John Newdigate. They had no children.
Richard Weston died on 5 July 1572. A funeral certificate at the College of Arms confirms his wives and children. He wrote his will two days before his death with his son serving as executor.

Birth

Born: About 1512.
The date is based on him graduating from Oxford in 1533, and so matriculating there about 1529. If the usual age of matriculation was around age 17 (16-19), we can place his birth as about 1512.

Marriages and Children

Married: 1st - Wilburga Catesby after 1548 when her first husband died. She was a daughter of Anthony Catesby of Whiston, Northamptonshire, and widow of Richard Jenour (d. 1548) of Great Dunmow, Essex. They had one son and one daughter. Wilburga died in 1553.
Married: 2nd - Margaret Barnaby by 1555. She was the daughter of Eustace Burneby, and the widow of Thomas Addington. They had one son and two daughters.
Married: 3rd - Elizabeth Lovett in July 1566. She was the daughter of Thomas Lovett of Astwell, Northants., and widow of Anthony Cave of Chicheley, Bucks. and John Newdigate (d. 16 August 1565). Elizabeth died testate and was buried on 21 August 1577 in Chicheley, Buckingham, England.
Children of Richard Weston and Wilburga Catesby:[15]
  1. Jerome Weston.
  2. Amphillis Weston. She married Benjamin Tichbourne.
Children of Richard Weston and Margaret Barnaby:
  1. Nicholas Weston.
  2. Winifride Weston.
  3. Margaret Weston.

Death

Died: 5 July 1572 at his house Skreens in Roxwell, Essex, England.[16][15]
He made a will two days before his death; it was proved on 29 July 1572.[14]

Research Notes

  • Parentage: The parentage of Judge Richard Weston is given in several pedigrees at the College of Arms.[17] A controversy arose when Chester Waters called these pedigrees a fabrication. This opinion was copied into other secondary sources. However, a close analysis of all the evidence shows the original 1632 Weston Pedigree to be correct, and Waters to be incorrect.
  • Family relations: Judge Richard Weston was the father of Jerome Weston, also a Justice of the Common Pleas. Jerome in turn was the father of Richard Weston K.G., 1st Earl of Portland.

  • Coat of Arms: Judge Richard Weston of Skreens in Roxwell, Essex on his tomb:

Ermine, on a chief azure five bezants, overall a mullet or on a martlet gules for difference.[18]

Importantly, these are the same arms used by John Weston of Lichfield, by his brothers, and by his brothers descendants in multiple lines.

Weston-1838 and Weston-137 appear to represent the same person because: The connection was through Weston's daughter Amphillis which I cleaned up. Weston-1838 is only connected to her orphaned profile and they only information there is wrong so...

I left the ficticious "Cecilia Neville" since it was his decendants that created this pedigree, but there's no evidence the Essex Weston family is related to the Lichfield Weston family - see John Weston for more details.
