Biography

Peter was born about 1827[1] in Ratho, Midlothian, Scotland. He was the son of David Weston and Elizabeth Wilson.[2]

Peter married Elizabeth Fisher firstly on 18 October 1851 in Dunipace, Stirling, Scotland (Weston home parish) and also on 16 November 1851 Longdyke, Falkirk, Stirling Scotland (Fisher home parish).[3][4] Apparently it was quite normal to celebrate the marriage at the normal town of residence of both parties.

No record of their arrival in Australia has yet been found - see research note.

Peter and Elizabeth had one child, Janet Drummond Weston, in 1852.

Elizabeth died in or prior to 1854, however no record of the death has been found in Victoria - see research note. Peter married Elizabeth's cousin, Agnes Fisher, on 12 April 1854 in the manse of the Presbyterian Church at Geelong.[2]

Peter and Agnes then had two children, Agnes Elizabeth Frances Weston in 1855, and Peter Weston in 1857.

Peter died on 9 February 1857, aged 30 years, as the result of a mine accident.[5][6] He is buried in the Old Ballarat Cemetery.[7]

Research Notes

Arrival in Australia: No record of their arrival in Australia has yet been found, but I wonder if the entry for Peter West, aged 25, and Elizabeth West, aged 21, on Success Jun 1852, Book 8, page 70 (same ship as Robert & Margaret Wright (Elizabeth's sister) might be them. Also need to check entries in Book 5A, page 220.

Elizabeth's death: No death registration has been found for Elizabeth. The image of the registration of Peter's marriage to Agnes states that he was a widower, and gives the date as March 1854.[2] I find it difficult to believe he remarried only one month after his first wife died, but stranger things have happened. Perhaps it means that he was a widower at that time, however the death may have occurred prior to that. I have wondered if possibly Elizabeth may have died in childbirth when Janet was born. The other possibility is that Elizabeth was very ill, that Agnes was caring for them all (whether she was brought out specifically to do so, or she came to Australia for another reason will probably never be known) so when Elizabeth died, Peter married Agnes shortly after. DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Peter by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Peter:
