21 Dec 1586: Will of William Weston, Yeoman of Mayfield, Sussex: In the name of god amen. The 21st Day of December in the thirtieth year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lady Elizabeth by the grace of god Queen of England, France and Ireland Defender of the Faith [], I William Weston of Mayfield in the County of Sussex yeoman being sick in body but of perfect memory god be thanked therefore do make and ordain through my last will and testament in manner and form following. First I bequeath my soul into the hand of god my maker and Redeemer trusting to be saved by the only merit of Jesus Christ my only Redeemer and my body to the earth from whence it was taken. Item, I will and bequeath unto Debora my daughter forty pound to be paid unto her at her age of one and twenty years or at her day of marriage which shall first happen to be put note by my executrix within half a year next after my decease in manner following, that is to say, my will and meaning is that Samuel Newington and Joseph Newington, my wife’s brothers, shall have the use and [occupation] of the said forty pounds and they to enter into a convenient bond unto Thomas Weston my brother and Thomas Ballard my brother in law to pay the said forty pounds at her said age of one and twenty years or her day of marriage which shall first happen. And also to pay forty shillings a year for the use of the same money for so many years as they shall have the [occupation] of the said forty pounds. All which increase coming of the said forty pounds I will and bequeath unto my son John to be paid unto him in for following, that is to say, forty shillings a year yearly after he shall accomplish the age of fourteen years. The rest of the said increase to be paid to him when the said forty pounds shall be due to be paid if my said son be then living or else the said increase also to be paid unto the said Debora my Daughter when the forty pounds above mentioned shall be due to be paid. And if the said Debora happen to die before her said age of one and twenty years or her day of marriage, Then my Will is that the said forty pounds and the increase thereof shall be paid unto my son John at his age of one and twenty years. And if the said John and Debora happen to die before the said forty pounds be due to be paid as aforesaid, Then I will and bequeath the said forty pounds and the increase thereof as followeth, that is the one half to Mary my wife her executor or assigns and the other half unto the children of my brother Thomas Weston their executors or assigns to be paid within one year next after the decease of the Longer lived of the said John and Debora. All the rest of my goods and chattels, movables and immovables I bequeath unto Mary my wife, whom I make my sole and only executrix of this my last will and testament. Also I make and ordain my brother Thomas Weston and my brother in Law Thomas Ballard officers of this my said will and testament. This is the Will and Designation of me the foresaid William Weston make the day and year first before written touching my Land and tenement in Mayfield aforesaid, that is I will and bequeath all my said Lands and tenements unto Mary my said wife until John my son come unto and accomplish the age of one and twenty years to the intent that she shall bring up my children in virtue and good Learning. And after that I will and bequeath all my said Lands and tenements unto my said son John and to his heirs for ever. And if my said son happen to die before he accomplish the said age of one and twenty years, Then I will that Mary my said wife shall have all my said Lands and tenements during her natural life and after her decease to remain to the right heirs of me the said William for ever. And if my said wife happen to die before my son John shall accomplish the said age of one and twenty years, Then I will that Samuel Newington my wife’s brother shall have the use and occupation of all my said Land until my said son accomplish the said age as guardian unto my said son to the intent to bring up my said children in virtue and good Learning and to account to my said son of the rest of the profit and if the said Samuel also happen to die before my said son’s age of one and twenty years Then my will is that Joseph Newington shall have the occupation of all my said Lands in Like manner as the said Samuel in before Limited to have the same. Witnessed at the making of the said will before written Thomas Farmer, Richard Wllam, Thomas Dyne and diverse other. Probate 16 January 1587.[3]
