His death was reported in the The Dubbo Liberal and Macquarie Advocate on 4 July 1919 as:
WILLIAM JOHN WESTON. Yesterday Mrs. J. Logue, of the Occidental Hotel, received word that her father, Mr. William John Weston, died at the Coast Hospital, Sydney, at 5.30 that morning. The deceased had been ailing for some time, and it became necessary to have an operation performed. Owing to the hospitals being filled with influenza patients, great difficulty was found by his son, Mr. F. Weston, in getting hospital accommodation. He succeeded in getting his father into the Coast Hospital. The operation was performed by Dr. McCormack, but the patient died soon afterwards.
The late Mr. Weston was 72 years of age. He was born in London, and came to Australia with his parents when 9 years of age. He came to Dubbo in the early seventies, and while residing here he married. His wife pre-deceased him 37 years ago. After leaving Dubbo he went to Cobbora, and resided there for many years, acting as returning officer for that centre, as well as fulfilling many honorary offices. Lately he resided with his son at Merrygoen. He leaves a grown up family of four — two sons, Mr. Percy Weston, Merrygoen, and Mr. Frederick Weston, Wyalong; and two daughters, Mrs. J. Logue, Occidental Hotel, Dubbo, and Miss Emily Weston, Dubbo. Owing to the disorganised state of the telegraph service great difficulty is experienced in getting messages through from Sydney, but it is expected that the remains of the deceased will arrive in Dubbo by train to-morrow, and the funeral will take place immediately after the arrival of the train.[3]
