William Weston was born at Hailsham in Sussex in 1834.[1] He passed away in 1936.
He was still resident in Hailsham with his parents and siblings in 1841.[2]
He was christened on 26 Dec 1846 at Ninfield in Sussex, England.[3]
Early in 1851 William is recorded in the census, living in his parents' home at Ninfield.[4]
William had three other brothers and a sister. He went to the United States in 1851, where he learned his trade as a builder. After returning to England to avoid the American Civil War, he came out to Lyttelton New Zealand on the ship Roehampton in 1858. He was an early settler in Kaiapoi and as a builder he ‘erected a large number of buildings in the district’, including the Methodist church, of which he was a trustee . For several years he served on the local borough council and for about six years he belonged to the Kaiapoi Rifles. In 1861 he married Sarah Gulliver[5] , daughter of the late W Gulliver, of Bristol. Sarah died in 1888, leaving nine children, Kate being the youngest. William married again to the widow of W Edmonds of Kaiapoi.
