Biography

George was born about 1818. He passed away in 1880.

  • 27 May 1844: Marriage of George Garland Weston, son of George Garland Weston, and Eliza Cantis, daughter of James Cantis, at St. Mary's, Whitechapel, Middlesex, England[1] registered Q2 at Whitechapel, London, England[2].
  • 23 May 1847: Listed with wife Eliza at the christening of daughter Elizabeth Cantis Weston at St Mary, Whitechapel, Stepney, London, England.[3]
  • Arrived May 1855 on the ship "Omega", George G (37) wife Eliza (39) and daughter Eliza C (3).
  • At the time of the death of his wife Eliza in 1860, George had his occupation cited as 'Miner' at Mount Blackwood Victoria, (death cert of Eliza).
  • Presumably after the death of her parents Eliza Cantis Weston returned to England as she is recorded in the 1871 England Census as being in the household of Mary Ann (Weston) Palmer, Mary Ann Weston (1815-1873) at Lambeth Surrey. It is unclear if she returned to England prior to her father leaving Victoria for Otago New Zealand in Dec 1861, It unlikely that George would have wanted Eliza to accompany him to Otago as the conditions there were very poor and difficult.
  • There is a record of a G G Weston departing Victoria for Otago in Dec 1861, however the year of birth given is abt 1829. The entry for age on the original passenger list is however difficult to verify as the writing is very hard to decipher. The list states that his occupation or calling was 'Miner' as were all the other passengers aboard who were also male, so presumably they were heading off to the Otago gold rush in New Zealand.

  • The marriage certificate 23 Apr 1872 of Eliza Cantis Weston cited her father George Garland Weston as deceased.
  • Information disclosed in the Inquest on George Weston 1880/606 may be evidence that this is the same person, an informant stated that the deceased was a widower and former Miner. However the year of death not not align with the marriage record of Eliza Cantis Weston where he is noted as being deceased before 23 Apr 1872.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with George by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with George:

Hi Don, The dates you quote are not relevant, perhaps you were meaning 1860-1870. Which in any case still gives the same outcome. You may recall the below reference which I think you may have sourced originally: George Garland Weston- notice in Otago Daily Times for creditors to prove claims in the estate of the said person having died intestate. Death assumed as prior to Nov 1863.

Otago Daily Times (NZ) 7 Nov 1863. Judicial and Law Notices:

I have updated the Biography quite recently which has a reference to G G Weston travelling to Otago from Victoria Dec 1861. I am reasonably confident that this the same person.

Dave, I have looked through the NZ BDM's and there is no George who passed away between 1960 and 1970.
