Biography

William was born about 1828, the son of Daniel Weston (marriage certificate from John Mullis).

He married Margaret Beard 26 March 1855 at the parish church of St Nicholas in Warwick. The marriage certificate records him as living at Bridge Row, his profession as gardene, his father's profession as gardener, and his father's name as Daniel Weston. Both he and his wife marked the certificate with an X.

His daughter's birth certificate (July 1860) recorded his occupation as Engine Feeder in a Gelatine Works. This was presumably the Nelson Gelatine Works[1], which operated from 1837 to 1972.

William was recorded in the 1861 census for Warwick as living at 4 Sanders Street Warwick in the following household:

William Weston 33, Engine Man, born in Emscote, Warwick
Margaret Weston 32, born in Buckingham
William Weston 4, born in Emscote, Warwick
Sarah Weston 9 mnths, born in Emscote, Warwick

with two lodgers:

John Wade 25, Railway servant
William Swift 34, Engine driver

William was recorded in the 1871 census for Leamington. This close to Warwick, on the other side of the River Avon. It reported him as living at 2 Tavistock Street, Leamington, in the following household:

William Weston 43, Publican, born in Warwick
Margaret Weston 42, born in Buckingham
William Weston 13, Errand boy, born in Emscote, Warwick
Sarah Weston 10, daughter of Publican, born in Emscote, Warwick

The buildings 1 and 2 Tavistock Street still exist. A photograph taken in 1900 (Reference: PH, 352/111/31, img: 1133, Warwickshire County Record Office[2]) shows it looking neglected, but by 2024 the terrace has been turned into smart shops.

William and Margaret had two children:

  1. William Henry Weston 1858-?
  2. Sarah Ann Weston 1860-1917

The death of a William Weston, aged 46, was recorded at Warwick in 1874. This record fits with our William Weston.
