Research Notes

Possible record, "United States Census, 1810," database with images, FamilySearch [(https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XH26-Z4P : accessed 21 May 2022)], John Weston, Bertie, North Carolina, United States; citing p. 148, NARA microfilm publication M252 (Washington D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.), roll 39; FHL microfilm 337,912.

1810 Census, Bertie Co, NC may be his father (John Weston, Sr.) Males <10 1, 16-25 (John Weston, Jr),1, >45 1 . Females <10 2, 10-15 1, 16-25 1 , 26-44 1, >45 1. Slaves 2.Birth yr not known with certainty. This is an educated guess. Probably born in Bertie, NC. . I am leading toward a John Weston as Weston-9609 's father with William Weston his grandfather. But I have no firm link to this lineage.

Marriage event of John Weston and Olive Hewitt confirmed in second marriage of son Peterson and deed records of Josephus Hewitt. Estimate of marriage yr based on estimated birth year of oldest child .

Northampton and Bertie County Deed research notes of Jim Williams of Charleston, SC shared with me on June 2014 . 1835, Deed Record Bk 32, p 218, Benjamon Ward sells 63 acres to Olliff Wesson $141.75. John Weston probably died in mid 1830's. Another record that suggest his death in 1830's. 29 Nov 1834, Northampton Co, NC, Deed Bk 27, p37. Olive Weston to K.C. Watson & John H Grimes $15. Land formerly owned by Josephus Hewitt, decd, loaned to his daughter Olive Weston, formerly Olive Hewitt (Since sell is by her and not husband assume John Weston is deceased).

Source, "The Deeds of Bertie Co, NC 1772-1785" abstracted by Dr Stephen E Bradley, Jr. Bk 12,p 14. John Weston, planter of Bertie Co to William Virgin, shipwright. 28 March 1772. John Weston late of Bertie in his will dated 8 Dec 1760 to son John Weston his 200 acre plantation in Society Parish on the Landing Path to Landing at the River. Mentions son John Weston and daughter Patience Weston. Sale was 400 acres. also signed by Winney Weston 225-(252) Solomon Weston planter of Bertie to Thomas Shenan. 1 June 1775. John Weston late in his will dated 8 Dec 1760 gave Solomon Weston 100 acres in Society Parish on east side of Cashy River opposite Windsor Town joining Turkey Swamp. also signed by Ann Weston. 265-(297) John Weston of Bertie to William Ashburn. 27 Jan 1777. 50 acres on Salmon Creek joining Spring Branch. Also signed by his wife Winne Weston. May Court 1777.

Possible lead on grandfather or grand-uncles of John Weston, the Will of William Weston, Bertie Co 12 Nov 1747. Probate Feb 1748. Son's Ephraim, John and William given lands upon Loosing Swamp. Sons Malachi and Thomas given plantation. Daughter Rachel. Wife Catherine. Executors sons John and William. Wife Catherine may be Catherine Blanchard.

Wynn Weston Herbert was contacted by Ancestry.com member Billy Bardin in 2013 suggesting that his 2XGGM Francis Wesson Gay Jobe was an older sister or half sister to Josephus Weston. No proof only speculation since they were neighbors in 1860 census and Turner Jobe was a shoemaker. I (Wynn Weston Herbert) have no documentation that this could be true but since I have so little information on John Weston it could be.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
