Timothy Wetmore was born at Rye, New York, 1729, [1] [2] the son of The Rev. James Wetmore and Anna Dwight; died at New York City, 22 Mar 1820, and buried there in St. Paul's Cemetery; [3] married (1) at Christ Church, Rye, by his brother-in-law, The Rev. Joseph Lamson, 21 Oct 1756, Jane Haviland of Rye, had James, Jane, Anna, Timothy, Fletcher, Thomas, Luther, Theodore, Robert Greffieth; married (2), after Jane's death in New York City, 5 Aug 1777, [4] Rachel (_____), widow of Benjamin Ogden of New York; no issue. [5] After his death, she removed to New Brunswick, where she died ("late of Saint John") at the village of Magaguadavic in Saint George Parish, 2 Jul 1829, ae 94y. [6]

Timothy emigrated with his brother James, from New York to the mouth of the St. John River with the Loyalists in the spring of 1783. [7] He was one of the first graduates of King’s College (now Columbia University), New York. At the opening of the Supreme Court in Saint John in 1788, he was admitted to the bar. Five years later, he and his son, Thomas Wetmore, formed a legal partnership. On first coming to the province, he settled in Carleton on lot No. 2367, [8] but a few years later removed to Gagetown, [9] where he held a number of county offices. In 1800, he returned to New York, where he died in 1820 in his 85th year. [10]

Research Notes

The first land grant referenced is to Timothy Wetmore in Carleton Township in 1785. The second land grant referenced (Gagetown) may be to son Timothy "Fletcher" Wetmore in 1792? There may have been some confusion between Timothy Wetmore (1729-1820) and son Timothy Fletcher Wetmore (1764-1799)? This profile has been changed to "Timothy Wetmore" for the time being. This creates some question about the information in latter part of the second paragraph of this biography.

It should also be noted that there was a Kings College in New Brunswick at the time.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Timothy by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Timothy:

Wetmore-207 and Wetmore-63 appear to represent the same person because: same name and death dates , same locations, merge away unconnected unlinked profile
