Elizabeth was born about 1777. She is the daughter of Jacob Wetzel and Margaret Summey.

- Will of Jacob Wetzel. This notarized copy (1930) found in DAR records was apparently obtained from the family (Maxwell) who ended up with the Wetzel lands. The original will and record copy would have been destroyed with the other Buncombe County records. A copy of his will, written in 1824, gives his daughters (in this order) as Katie Hefner, Peggy Hefner, Betsy Weise, Susan Clayton, Polly Mackey, Sally Clayton. His sons were Jacob, John, and Henry. His wife was named as Margaret.
