Biography

Genealogy shares time with Hiking as my two main passions.

I've been working on my family tree since the birth of my first child. The focus of that work originally narrowed to an effort to identify and re-connect with all the descendants of Ludwig Bützow (1763-1847) and his wife Maria Jalass (1764-1842). Ludwig was a schoolteacher in Mecklenburg in the northern part of what became East Germany. I took a trip there in 1992 as part of my genealogy research and was able to visit relatives who had just emerged from the isolation that was 45 years of Russian occupation.

Many or Ludwig's descendants immigrated to the United States, and the majority of my research involved tracking down the living descendants of 'long lost' branches of the family. It was an exciting and fulfilling adventure to re-establish those connections.

After publishing a family history book in 1993, in which more than 1250 of the direct descendants of Ludwig and Maria are documented, I put genealogy work aside, raised my kids, retired, and hiked the Appalachian Trail, then just continued hiking long distance trails. In 2017, when my hiking brought me to the area of my family roots in Wisconsin, my interest was re-kindled.

The tools available to the genealogist had certainly changed since 1993 (which was basically pre-internet). I joined Family Search first, then WikiTree in early January 2018, Ancestry three years later. I began to delve into the ancestors on my mother's side and then into those of my children through their mother. The latter lineages have opened up a vast landscape of deep genealogy. All of my connections to notable people (other than pro footballer Will Witherspoon and environmentalist Aldo Leopold) are through my ex-wife and children.

Hi!

If you're a member of the Google Group,* then you've heard that the Magna Carta Project has retired the Gateway Guardian initiative. Would you delete or replace your Gateway Guardian sticker please?

WikiTree has two relatively new stickers - Template:Relationship_Sticker and Template:Connection Sticker - that you might want to use if you're related to or connected to the Gateway. There's also the Template:Descendant sticker that you can use. To see tailored coding for these stickers (e.g., with the Magna Carta Project logo), please see Space: Magna Carta Stickers#sticker.

Thanks! Liz

* If you're not and would like to be, please send a request to https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/wikitreemagnacarta (be sure to include your WikiTree ID; the Google Group is no longer "Project members only", but it is restricted to WikiTree members).

Hello again! I posted a comment two weeks ago and have not yet heard back from you. I hope you are well! Do you want to remain in the Germany Project? If I don’t hear back from you by the end of November, I’ll go ahead and remove you from our member roster. You are, of course, always welcome to rejoin at any time via our G2G sign-up post.

Best wishes, Traci ~ Germany Project co-leader

Hi,

The Germany Project Leaders are doing their semi-annual check-in with all project members and we want to verify that you’re still interested in being a member of the Project. Please respond by private message and let me know.

Are you currently working with one of our Sub-projects or Teams? If not, take a look at our main Project page for a full list.

We really appreciate your contributions on WikiTree, and thank you for all your hard work. If you have any questions, please ask. We would also love to hear any feedback you may have for the project.

I look forward to hearing from you soon!

Hi! I see you switched to Affiliate. Please let me know if you'd like to rejoin the project in the future, when you might have some time to help us with project goals.

In the meantime, could you hide the Gateway Guardian sticker? (add --> after it & <!-- before it)

You are most certainly welcome (and encouraged!) to watchover/develop those profiles and trails, but Affiliates have no project requirements or responsibilities, so they're not Gateway Guardians.

Cheers, Liz

update - the previous text was deleted; the Gateway Guardian initiative was retired 7 February 2022. Thank you for serving in that role for William Norwood and siblings Elizabeth & Thomas Butler.

Hi! Thanks for the reply. You can work on any profile, whether or not your the Gateway Guardian. But with 84 project members and 240 Richardson-documented Gateway Ancestors, it would be great if you wanted to take on Elizabeth's brother also. So... just Elizabeth, her brother, & William Norwood? Or can I sign you up for Charles & Henry Norwood too?

note - the Gateway Guardian initiative was retired 7 February 2022 & the Trail Tracks page is no longer publicly viewable.

Hi Peter! I added you as Gateway Guardian for Elizabeth (Butler) Claiborne & William Norwood... but then couldn't find where we'd talked about it. I'm pretty sure you wanted to be their guardians. Did you also want to be the guardian of the two Norwoods that are in Richardson? (Norwood-613 & Norwood-817)

See Trail Tracks & post any changes you want there.

Cheers, Liz

edited ... to correct link to Henry Norwood's profile.

Hi Peter, I hope you'll have a chance to work on polishing the profiles of William Norwood and his likely father Richard. When that's up to Magna Carta Project standards, I'm inclined to support upgrading William from "questionable" to "prospective" gateway ancestor.

Hello Peter

Thanks for stopping by my "home base" here at Wikitree. I'm happy you joined us here at Wikitree. How are you liking Wikitree so far ? Wikitree may seem a bit confusing at first to someone not accustomed to Wiki coding. But fortunately, it's easy to pick up and is a very powerful and flexible platform. And Wikitree's premise of a one collaborative tree provides everyone, from beginning family historian to professional genealogist the framework they need to grow and maintain accurate, shared family trees.

If you ever have any questions feel free to reach out to me, another member, Wikitree Mentor, Leader or post an inquiry to our G2G discussion forum.

Thank you for adding the Magna Carta tag to your profile and following Magna Carta posts in G2G, We appreciate your interest in Magna Carta heritage and genealogy, Are you aware that there is a Magna Carta Project in Wikitree ? The purpose of this high level project is to devlop and maintain Magna Carta related profiles, identify and develop relationship trails from recognized Gateway Ancestors to their Magna Carta Surety Baron ancestor, and perform other important tasks, such as profile improvement, error correction and doing quality reviews of existing trails and profiles.

I am guessing that you may have found a potential direct relationship trail to a Magna Carta Baron, or perhaps you just enjoy the challenge of researching and proving Pre-1700 and Pre-1500 profiles (both of which require certification for creating and editing} ? This field of research can present its own challenges, but it is very rewarding to those who take up the challenge.

If you think you might be a fit for the Magna Carta Project, you can join the Magna Carta project at one of two levels; Full Membership or Affiliate Membership. At either level you choose, we would welcome your participation and collaboration. For more information please see :

If you have a question or comment in regards to this message or would like additional information please contact Liz Shifflett, Project Leader, or David Douglas, Co-Leader, Project Coordinator (Membership)
